Season 6: Echoes of the Zynari
Location: Medbay.
1054 words - 2.1 OF Standard Post Measure
Sthilg let out a sigh as he finished cramming down another energy ration bar and drank the last of his coffee. His white eyes kept darting all around his small office. Given their current guest, he wasn't taking any chances that something was going to fly off the shelves.
Glancing at the computer console, he saw someone had his medical checkup due. Aren the ship's jag officer. Sending off a reminder and alerting the duty nurse on reception, he returned to his paperwork.
Aren always dreaded his checkups, but he knew it was time. His PADD had alerted him five minutes ago that his checkup was due. He stood in front of the Medbay door and then steeled himself.
Aren stepped inside the Medbay and nodded to the receptionist. "Ma'am. Captain T'Aevan, reporting for checkup."
The duty nurse smiled and told him to take a seat. Sthilg soon appeared putting on his best reptilian smile. " Hello there Mr T'Aevan glad you could make it."
Aren nodded, "Commander. Always glad to see you."
He gave the Gorn a weary and somewhat hesitant smile.
" Like wissse. Now i know your not a fan ssso let'sss get it underway." The gorn said heading back towards his office. " Any illnesssss or injuriesss since your lassst checkup?" He asked
Aren followed the doctor and willed his unease away, he'd done this hundreds of times by now.
"Had a slight cold a few weeks back, but nothing serious."
" Okay ssso let'sss get you on the biobed and take a look at you. How have you been sssleeping given are current guessst'sss." He added.
Aren hopped up onto the biobed and laid back, "Can't say I've had as much issue with them as others. Spent plenty of time along the neutral zone, I learned to sleep through a lot."
" A very valuable trait to collect." The gorn said as he stared at the scan. " I remember working with sssome romulan doctors during the dominion war. They ssseemed to be able to sssleep through anything. "
"Agreed. Not sure if it's a marine thing or a Romulan thing. Or both I suppose. I know there is a big push for being able to sleep on command and go days without sleep when you work for the Tal Shiar." Aren said trying his best to stay as still as possible.
" So any mattersss in the JAG department I've not heard off" Sthilg asked, keeping the man's mind of the medical scanner.
Aren shook his head slightly, "Not really. I don't know if you heard, but one of the lower deck Ensigns was trying to file a lawsuit over what he called proprietary technology because he claimed the positronic gel used in the maintenance of the Dilithium housing chamber was similar to the hair gel he claims to have invented five years ago."
Aren chuckled, "After all this time and all the changes we've made to societies in general and people are still sue happy. I promptly shut him down and told him he had no case and even if he did, a JAG lawyer wouldn't represent him in that matter."
Of all the things to be doing in this situation, Sthilg thought as he chukled to himself. " Maybe he'sss jussst doing sssomething to keep their mind occupied. " he offered as a suggestion for why they'd even think of trying such a bizzar claim.
Aren thought for a moment, "I suppose that would be a good enough reason. Still one of the more bizarre legal issues I've had to deal with. How about you Doc? Anything unusual you've had to deal with lately?"
" Besiedsss are guestsss making me clean everything in ward three ssseveral timesss? I had no idea curry sssauce could be ssso hard to ssshift. " the old sawbones said wryly.
Aren chuckled, "Never been too fond of curry myself. Something with the smell for me."
" That we can both agree on." Sthilg replied as he gazed at the incoming data.
Aren looked at the doc as he sat up, "So what's the verdict doc? Am I as healthy as a Phargellian Flea?"
" You have a sssubdermal tear in one of your musssles. Jussst lay back and I'll get it fixed before it get'sss any worssse." The doctor said after looking through the data.
Aren's eyes grew slightly concerned, but he leaned back on the bed again.
"A subdermal tear? I wonder how that happened." Aren mused, "It's been a minute since I've gone out and ran drills with the other marines. Any ideas what could've caused it doc?"
" Did you russsh out of bed any time recently? " the gorn suggested as he returned with a regenrator. " i remember when the first generation of thessse came out. The sssize of a brick and sssmelled of burning plastic. " he said twiling the pen side instrument in his hands.
Aren thought for a moment, snapped his fingers and replied, "You know what? I was running late yesterday morning for my shift and I do remember jumping out of bed and hurrying out the door."
" Mussst have pulled it then. " The gorn said as he went about his work. With the hands and skills of someone who had been practising medicine for over one hundred and fifty years. " There we go. Good asss new." He said with a proud look as he switch of the regnerator.
Aren smirked, sat up, eased himself off the bed and with hand extended said, "Thanks Doc, what do I owe ya?"
" Nothing, though I'll take a pint next time your buying something in the bar." The old doctor said with a smile.
Aren nodded with a grin, "Absolutely, do you think they'd mind if I brought in my own bottle of Romulan Ale?"
" I'm assssured they can make an exception for the doctor." The gorn grinned in reply.
"Alright then doc, I'll bring the ale you bring the conversation." Aren said as he extended his hand.
The gorn took it and gave it a good firm shake. " I'll see you around."
Aren nodded, smiled and headed out the sick bay doors. One more medical exam down, and this time nothing was asked about his mental health. That made Aren smile broader, maybe things were finally looking up. Now if only he could wake up on time to get to his shifts.
