Since the Elysium was in orbit for several days, Teevs didn't rush packing up his things. The daunting question of whether to stay aboard or return home gnawed at him, moreso now that he and Addison were on the cusp of having to make a decision, so he had been putting off packing in the futile hope that it would delay the inevitable. He hadn't touched the items in the civilian quarters yet, and most of the items on the Spheia were in storage anyways. He planned to talk to her about it during the shore leave, but it wasn't an easy conversation to have, let alone to have under pressure.
His concern at the moment was Kerilia. The ridge was pretty much grown in by now, and soon she'd have to go to the administrative office to be legally considered an adult. Which meant that his decisions wouldn't affect her as much. It somehow made his decision-making easier and harder at the same time. He watched as she moved around the Spheia, preparing gifts for the extended family. How did she grow up so fast?
Kerilia finished organising the gifts into a box. Many of the items were things she made in school, but she convinced her dad, who convinced someone on board, to let her use credits to make some Elysium-themed gifts as well. There were various small trinkets from the different species aboard that she was certain the cousins would appreciate. Looking up from the box, she noticed her dad staring. "Dad, you're staring again," she said with a hint of exasperation.
Blinking, Teevs gave her a warm smile. "I can't help it, pheya. Seeing you all grown up..." He sighed, then his voice became softer, "you look so much like your mother." The heaviness that came from that loss had softened over time, feeling more like a blanket than crushing. Walking over, he rested a hand on top of hers. "She'd be so proud of who you've become, Kerilia."
The mention of Kerilia's mother always reminded her of that gap in her chest. Saphse had missed so many milestones, and this was another one of them, but Kerilia had to be thankful for what she had. Placing her other hand on his, she looked up at him and smiled back, briefly. "I wish she could be here for Sen Vakai. It's... I'm almost... scared of doing the ceremony without her."
"Remember what she told us?" Even though Kerilia nodded, Teevs quoted Saphse's last words anyways. "My love thrives in both of you." Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out the pair of wedding rings he crafted. They were blue-grey polished stone bands with black specks, set into gold metal bands, and had minimal signs of wear. They were presented on a necklace chain. "I made them out of her favourite stone. It's an early Sen Vakai gift, but I want you to have them so you can always have both of us close to you."
Kerilia let out a soft gasp as she looked at the rings. They were... they were stunning. She vaguely recalled seeing her parents wear them, but it was so long ago. Maybe it was still the adjustment period for her hormones, but she felt her throat get tight. "Dad..." She let the rings sit in her palm for a couple seconds before she picked it up by the chain and put it over her head. The chain was cool around her neck, and her vision blurred.
Seeing Kerilia get emotional, Teevs gently pulled her into a hug. "It won't be the same, but you won't be alone during Sen Vakai, my love."
