The guards brought Leilani into one of the interrogation rooms. While she had been compliant, one guard had a weapon ready just in case. The guard holding her arm brought her to the chair that was in the middle of the room, and a shift in pressure to that grip instructed her to sit down.

Leilani had no choice but to sit, she did so waiting to see what they had planned for her next.

They put her arms behind the back of the chair and secured her legs, then the one who guided her in, Marou, stepped over to the table in the room. A shrug of the shoulders had the silver jacket of her uniform sliding off, and she folded it in half to place it on the table, leaving her in the dark blue uniform underneath. She then picked up a datapad that had been waiting for her and turned around to face Leilani. "We have questions for you. Answer them honestly, and this will be quick."

Leilani nodded. “I will answer, but is being restrained necessary?”

Marou gave a short laugh, though her expression was anything but amused. "And give you the chance to assault a guard? Your people have shown themselves to be violent." She glanced at the datapad briefly, reading the line items one more time, before shifting her attention fully toward the prisoner. "What do you know about the traitor, Teevs Dosivi?"

“Traitor? I didn’t know he was one.” Leilani answered honestly. “Why would a traitor bring his family to his homeworld, and our ship for that matter?”

The response was a quick jolt to the shoulder from a taser that Marou had procured from the table. "You do not ask questions, you answer them," she said coldly. "One of our security nodes flagged you with him two days ago. What did you discuss?"

Leilani sucked in a painful breath at the shock from the taser, she wasn’t going to let it get to her though. She was a marine and it would take a lot more than that to throw her. “Yes, I was with Teevs. He was showing me around his homeworld. As visitors here we wanted to know where was good to go.”

That seemed believable enough, though Marou didn't show it. "Did he mention anything about the Kavai? Communications with them, mentions of any trades or meetings?"

Leilani shook her head. “No, but that would be none of my business anyway. Teevs was just giving us advice on where we could get souvenirs, where was best to visit, and enjoy. He loves his homeworld.”

"If he loved his homeworld, he wouldn't have committed treason." Marou watched the prisoner closely, looking for mannerisms to distinguish her truths from her lies. "Did you know he brought illegal Kavai property to this planet?"

“How am I supposed to know any of this?” Leilani added as she looked at Marou. “I barely know anything about Teevs.”

The guard struck Leilani across the face with the side of the taser, leaving behind a cut from the device's edge. Marou wouldn't tolerate pointless questions, and she wasn't eager to repeat herself. "How long has he been on your vessel?"

“Not long!” Leilani answered her face stinging from the blow.

Marou's shoulders lifted in a sigh as she glanced at the datapad again. She tapped something in with her thumb before turning it around to face Leilani. On it was a frozen image of Kerilia in a cell. She was in the corner, curled up as much as she could be. Her hands weren't visible, and over her nose and mouth was a mask-looking device. The image also showed a dark spot on her forehead, above the newly developed ridge. It had a crescent shape and pointed downward. "Have you seen this marking before?"

Leilani frowned at the image. “I’ve barely seen the poor girl before! Heavens she’s just a child, what harm is she to you?”

"The Kavai indoctrinate their children to infiltrate our society," Marou said sharply. "We were lucky to catch one now before it caused any real damage." Turning the datapad back toward herself, she looked through the list of questions. "In the interactions you've had with Dosivi, did he ever seem like he was hiding something?"

“No, nothing!” Leilani added getting fed up with the line of questioning. “As I already said he was happy to show us around his home.”

The back-and-forth continued for another hour. Marou pressed with questions, and each time the response deviated from a direct answer to the question, she struck or tased Leilani. She eventually decided she'd gotten enough answers, giving the prisoner a break as she stepped back. She tossed the taser onto the table, the sound jarring in the confined space. Moving to the wall controls, Marou summoned guards to come take the prisoner to the holding cells with the others. "Your cooperation is appreciated," she told Leilani, though her words lacked any warmth.

Leilani was glad it was over, she hurt and ached now all she wanted was to rest. She just wanted to go home, to be with George and her family.
