Mission: Season 6: Episode 7: Crossroads of Destiny
Location: Elysium :: Sickbay
Timeline: MD5
4337 words - 8.7 OF Standard Post Measure

Shortly after the orders were given, the medical emergency alert demanded the presence of the medical staff. Word traveled fast that they'd be receiving the crew who had been detained. Sickbay was a flurry of activity as they prepared for the medical transports. It was anyone's guess what they'd be receiving.

Sthilg gave a slight grin to himself as he finished setting up the four operating suits ready for the wounded crew. Time for his people to work their magic.

J'Air was taking on the medical ward and bio-beds for any who were wounded but not needing surgery. She had several nurses and junior doctors already arriving and organised them quickly so each bed was attended and all the wards on Deck 12 were opened and ready. She put herself in the centre with the intention of doing a quick form of Triage to divert anyone who was transported to the wrong section and who might need to be elsewhere, for example if they needed surgery but were arriving on the ward, those kind of oversights could happen in any situation and emergency influxes of numerous patients made it more likely and it would need catching.

Transporter beams started appearing, breaking the tense anticipation in the room. The missing crew materialised, wearing grey shirts and grey pants, and their conditions varied. Some appeared relatively unharmed, with scrapes, bruises, and irritation where restraints were secured too tightly. Others were more roughed up and using marines and others for support, at best looking like they were ganged up on and at worst like they had been interrogated.

Anna materialized in Sickbay. She blinked slowly, looking around. She seemed a little stunned to be there. She had looked better, certainly, but she wasn't seriously injured.

Petty Officer Sarah Gabriel, a Terran Nurse with some experience but nothing as complicated or busy as this incident, was just trying to adjust to the fact that injured patients were beaming in all over sickbay at random intervals and with totally different injuries, and *numbers* of injuries and it was all hands wherever anyone could help. Seeing Lt Equivias materialise, looking confused and perhaps a little bit shocked as she began to realise where she was, Sarah, who was the closest medic free at the time, approached Anna and helped her to a biobed for a scan to see if she was hurt and if so, how badly.

"Are you in pain?" was the first question Sarah asked Anna as she guided her gently onto the bed and set the bioscanner in motion. "Take your time, I'll have a medical picture shortly. How do you feel?"

"I'm sort of numb," Anna said. "They treated us pretty roughly but I don't think I'm seriously injured." Still, she complied with the nurse. She settled down on the biobed. The scan revealed she was badly bruised, dehydrated, and sleep deprived but lacked any serious internal injury.

As the transporter beam faded away, Zac was taken to a biobed to get treated. "Emily? Leilani?" He called to his companions who had been first taken and rescued with others from the Elysium crew.

Naxea materialized. She blinked several times as her eyes adjusted to the lighting in sickbay. It was a relief to see the familiar surroundings of the Elysium again.

Materializing next to her was Addison who stood on shaky legs. She squinted at the bright light of sickbay.

Noticing Addison's worse condition, she waved the approaching medica away. "No, see to Major Leyton first. I can wait," she grimaced, gesturing towards Addison.

Mattias was the next to materialize. He was still unconscious and his wounds, though semi-treated, were still very nasty-looking. Even when on stun, shot at close range was enough to cause heavy damage to the tissues. And he had three nasty burn marks, not to mention the bruises that covered his body, from the beatings, broken bones and internal injuries. Also, his nose was clearly broken, and the right side of his jaw was swelling, indicating that is was fractured.

Sthilg was at his family's side in moments, his arm scanner running over them, and with his free hand indicating who was going to the operating theatre and who was going to the ward.

Teevs glanced up when the transporter enveloped him. When he saw Elysium's sickbay appear, there was a pause as his sluggish thoughts caught up before his expression changed. His eyebrows tilted. Turning his head, his searching eyes fell upon his daughter and Addison. They were alive. His face gained a sliver of relief. For a couple seconds, there was hope. Then, his eyes lolled closed and he collapsed into the arms of the medical staff.

J'Air happened to be closest to Teevs as he collapsed and she caught him before he hit the floor. Easing him up, with the help of a nurse, the two got him up onto a bio-bed and J'Air began to program it to scan and then she set it to treat what it discovered. Teevs had a clear break in his right tibia and some deep and quickly colouring bruises, over other colours that indicated earlier bruising of the same flesh previously. The scan showed some internal signs of deep damage as well and J'Air soon decided that this was a patient for the CMO and surgery. She called over to Sthilg who was close by, with his wounded family members and asked him if he could please come and assess Teevs with a view to taking him into Theatre.

Kerilia, while still distressed, gained some relief when she saw Elysium's sickbay replace the dreary prison walls. She quickly looked around, and her eyes widened when she saw her dad. He looked terrible. Their eyes met for a brief second before he fell unconscious. If her eyes could grow any wider, they did. She froze, unable to look away. For a few seconds, she forgot how to breathe, and when she gasped in a breath, she felt like she couldn't get enough. She tried another breath. Then another. Each breath was too shallow, too quick, to offer meaningful regulation of her overloaded nervous system.

Ben Kensington noticed Kerilia's hyperventilation and hurried to take her a gentle calming oxygen mask, placing it into her hands to let her put it on herself so as not to panic her any further by trying to force it on her. The doctor then took her by the shoulders and led her gently to a biobed of her own and sat her down, scanning her to check for injuries and talking softly to her asking her to breathe as slowly as she could, deep and regular breaths. He reassured her that her dad was in good hands and was already being treated as they spoke so just to concentrate on herself for a moment.

For a while, Kerilia didn't notice any of this. A part of her was vaguely aware that someone was speaking to her and moving her, but it wasn't until she lost sight of Teevs that her frightened eyes focused on the new face. She tried to mimic his breathing, her own breath shuddering and ragged. She was relatively ok physically, with only some bruising where the restraints were. She was hungry, thirsty, and tired. A nurse noticed she was dehydrated and went to grab some juice, advising her to drink it slowly so it didn't make her sick.

Naxea took a step back, allowing the medica and doctors to treat the worse off such as Leyton, Teevs, and Mattias. She grimaced with the movement as she tasted blood in her mouth. Her sides hurt immensely with every shallow breath, causing her to work harder at breathing as she placed her hand on a nearby bulkhead to brace herself as her lightheadedness intensified.

When Tate first materialized in the ship‘s medical center, she was as disoriented as everyone else. It took her a moment to get her bearings as she was unaccustomed to big on the other end of a transporter beam into an area of the ship she knew like the back of her hand. This time, however, she wasn’t one of the people moving back-and-forth with purpose in a teal uniform looking to save others. This time, she was the one wearing drab clothing and expected to be assessed at categorized, according to her injuries, which were (laughingly? Luckily?) minimal.

Quickly scanning the room, Sullivan had a moment of overwhelm, not knowing where to start. Forcing herself to take a deep breath and focus, she eventually spotted Naxea who appeared to be conscious, which was better than the last time Tate had spotted her. Sullivan’s relief, however, quickly turned to anxiety as she watched the color start to drain from the other woman‘s face as she appeared about to collapse.

Tate rushed forward to offer support and guide her to a bed, already scanning for a nearby tricorder. Better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission at this point. “There you are,“ she offered, as she put her arm around the other woman to support her weight. “I was wondering where you had gotten off to.“ The counselor‘s tone was not falsely cheerful, but there was a clear note of defiance. She was not going to give their captors or the current situation, any more thought than she had to. It also didn’t escape Tate’ notice this wasn’t the first time Naxea had endured captivity and violent assault and it wasn’t the first time she had seen her in the aftermath, although it was the first time Tate had born direct witness to at least some of it.

In the melee, a couple nurses had managed to wrestle the badly beaten and unconscious form of Major Mattias Richardson up onto a gourney. They then levitated him up onto a bio bed. That's when the truth of his internal injuries were found. Along with the three stun burns, mottled bruising and clear bloody scabs on the surface, underneath the skin was even worse. He had, moving from his head down, a cracked skull, double broken nose, fractured right lower mandible, three teeth knocked out, bruising on his larynx from when he had been strangled during one point in his interrogation. His right collar bone was broken in two places, two ribs on the right were cracked one on the left was cracked, another severely broken and his left lung was punctured, and filling with fluid. His liver was lacerated and his right kidney showed signs of prolonged electroshock torture. His legs were bruised, but the only broken bone in his lower extremities, was the big toe of his left foot. He was also dehydrated and his pulse was low and thready.

Rin stumbled, not having expected the transport. Her vision *and her brain) couldn't quite keep up with the sudden change in locations. She knew she was somewhere different, but it took a moment to realize where that was. She dropped into a fighting stance and nearly hit the first nurse who reached out to steady her, pulling her punch short just in time. She muttered a "Sorry" and relaxed, dropping her hands to indicate she was no longer a threat as she was carefully led away.

Having handed Teevs over to the CMO to take away for surgery, J'Air turned to see who was looking as if they needed help. She could see Rin close by, stumble and directed Ben towards her, with a gesture, while she took herself over to the Biobed where Major Richardson was lying. There was a nurse looking bewildered about where to start, who had begun a run of bio-tests with the use of the biobed's facilities. She had raised the bio arch over the Major and had begun the program for a full body scan. The results were rolling manically up the screen of the monitor above the bed-head and the nurse was looking pale. J'Air arrived and put a reassuring hand on the nurse's arm to steady her, recognising the look of someone who was just realising that she was looking at a patient who needed a lot of help.

The nurse looked up at J'Air and gave her a relieved smile. "You're doing just fine, well done." J'Air murmoured just loud enough for the two of them to share but not to attract any attention. "Those scans are going to be a lot of help." she went on, slightly louder.

"Let's see." She started off with analgesics, then she said to the Nurse, whose name she knew was Freya Svenson, a Terran who had joined the crew a few days before the Elysiumhad left Galaxy Station, the day before the encounter with the quantum filament, "We need to do something right away for that punctured lung" J'Air was already programming in a course of regeneration for the broken rib and a concurrent drain from the lung tissue at the bottom of the lung concerned. She then immediately went on to program in some sutures and more regeneration for the tear in the tissue around where the previously damaged rib had now been retracted and repaired. This last patch up secured the lung's functioning with the lining restored to dry and the air contained and no longer leaking out. Now stabilised from that first imminent threat from that particular damage, J'Air looked at the scan of Matthias' fractured skull next but said to Freya beside her, "Please put up instructions for plasma infiltration and electrolytes." She moved sideways slightly to allow this to happen while she was examining the X-rays in detail and then set up for MRI to show more as well.

"When we're sure he's out of immediate threat and his skull and cerebral tissue aren't too dangerously damaged, then we can send him over to the CMO for surgery to his liver and larynx, nose, jaw, teeth, skull, collarbone and kidney repairs. He'll need to be kept for monitoring for possible concussion...., well, actually *probable*, not so much possible, but a very thorough repair job is needed please! Also, save these scans up onto his record so they'll be there, ready for the Boss to see." J'Air concluded to her nurse who implemented it all and then approached Sthilg through is Theatre Team to let him know all the information he would need.

Naxea grimaced, biting her lip to keep from crying out as Tate lifted her onto the bio bed, her sides suddenly feeling like it was on fire and being stabbed at the same time. She coughed painfully, adding to the pain in her side, causing blood to speck her lips. The room began to spin as she blinked several times to try and stay conscious. "Thanks," she muttered between labored breaths.

The biobed scaned Naxea and displayed her vitals and biological image of her body with her stomach, sides, lungs, and ribs in the red with her ribs broken in at least a half dozen places. Internal bleeding also listed on the list.

Lieutenant T'Kek entered the controlled chaos of Sickbay, having been called in to help. He spotted the Marine Detachment CO sitting on a bio bed with Commander Sullivan near her. "Commander," he greeted as he looked at the biobed display. "Do you require my assistance?"

"I'm fine," Tate replied more irritably than she intended, grateful she was being asked if she needed help rather than being ordered to her own bed. More softly, she added, "Please just help her and I can assist you if you need. I know she was shot and rendered unconscious, but I'm not sure what else may have happened after that."

Sullivan didn't add it was because she was dragged into her own cell after that, not wanting to sound self-pitying.

"The biobed picture isn't encouraging. Scans are showing shattered ribs, trauma to kidneys and lungs, internal bleeding," T'Kek said before looking at Naxea. "Colonel. I need you to lie down and I will have to sedate you."

Naxea nodded as she laid down, stifling a cry as she slowly laid down on the bed as T'Kek pressed a hypospray to her neck. "She will require surgery to heal the extensive trauma to her internal organs."

Tate nodded at T’Kek’s words, but she kept her eyes on Naxea, reaching for her hand as she was eased onto her back. It was perhaps a gesture that suggested a greater familiarity between them than there actually was, but it was in Tate‘s nature to offer some measure of comfort. In the moments before the sedative took effect, Sullivan offered, “You’ve survived too much to leave us now, don’t you worry. I’ll let you decide if it’s a good thing or a bad thing, but I’ll be waiting for you after surgery.“

Naxea wanted to reply but the blackness consumed her too quickly as the sedative took effect and she lost consciousness.

T'Kek immediately began to prepare Naxea for surgery as a nurse brought over a surgical covering. Another nurse brought over a surgical cart. T'Kek took a moment and began to do the surgical covering. He looked to Tate. "I will ensure she pulls through. I will inform you when the surgery is completed," he stated

Leilani had arrived alongside Emily both glad to be back onboard ship. Emily was fortunate not to have been questioned, though Leilani was more worse for wear. Cuts and bruises on her face from being struck with the edge of the taser, and the general after effects of having been tasered several times were still lingering. Emily put on a brave face, but all she wanted was to go home and curl up in a corner where she was safe.

Heather rushed over offering Emily and Leilani some help. “Welcome home, let’s get you both over here.” She motioned to a biobed right on the end where it was a little quieter.

As the transport beam disengaged, Damien stumbled forward slightly as his feet found solid ground once more. Compared to some of the others, his injuries weren't nearly as bad. A few cracked ribs, a bloody and bruised face, some burns, and the skin around his wrists had torn and split where he'd attempted to free himself numerous times. He found himself collapsing against a nearby wall, clutching his side, eyes closed, breathing heavily, as he waited for someone to see to him.

Having got Matthias to Sthilg for surgery, J'Air was free to assist Damien as he beamed in right beside her at the best possible moment. "Your Guardian Angel was looking out for you!" she muttered softly as she helped him to the bio-bed that had just been vacated. Lifting him up as gently as she could, she saw him wince and apologised, immediately giving him some analgesic to make him more comfortable. She set the bio arch to scan and garner an overall picture of his injuries and found broken ribs similar to those of Major Richardson. Fortunately Damiens lungs had remained intact but they were badly bruised and had been roughly beaten out of their optimum normal condition.

J'Air took replication to them and regenerated the broken bones, restoring the shapes needed for proper function again. With him breathing normally again she set about his burns next and regenerated those and the skin on his torn and split wrists then his face. She had made a full examination of his skull and checked to eliminate any fractures but she then had a long and careful job of repairing a fair percentage of both surface and some deep and repeated bruising and signs of intense brutal treatment. She worked as gently as she could and covered as much of the treatment as possible in this first repair. "You'll need further regeneration and recovery time, lots of physio and plenty of rest" she stated to him but he did seem to have become only semi-aware of the rather obvious statements. "You'll have to stay overnight" she added and nodded towards Freya, the nurse from earlier, so that she would do the necessary procedure to 'admit' Damien to stay over.

Approaching Ben who was tending to Commander Rin, J'Air knew he would have the care she needed underway and in very capable hands, but with a moment to assist if needed, she passed by and peeped at the notes that he was compiling, noticing the same kinds of injuries and shaking her head in shock and sorrow at the savagery inflicted on their fellow crew members.

Rin was too tired to object as she was led to a bed. The superficial injuries would take care of themselves. With some standard neurological medical assistance, her right eye should make a full recovery. The left eye, the one full of charred circuitry, was another matter. The surrounding skin was blackened from an electrical burn. Those cybernetics were going to need surgery...after the more critical cases, as nothing seemed to need immediate attention.

"Can you shut down that eye's neural link?" Rin asked Ben. "The feedback is giving me headaches and I can't see anything out of it anyway."

"I can do a temporary bypass" Ben nodded. "I don't want to shut it down too permanently because I don't know how bad or difficult the electrical and burn damage is, but a temporary bypass should at least render it unable to integrate until the surgery can be performed in more detail. It should give you relief from misfiring electrical impulses and I can give you some more analgesic to take the pain out of the headaches." He explained.

Rin nodded. "Whatever you need to do. Then you can tuck me into a corner while you tend to the others. Diagnostics indicates there's nothing in danger of imminent failure."

Zac lay on the biobed. He had been led there and made to lie down which he didn't fight. His head hurt, one eye was closed, his jaw was swollen and his back howled in silent protest. He saw J'Air passing by and he called to her "J'Air?"

Hearing her name J'Air turned back and saw Zac. She hurried over to him and ran a tricorder over him without a moment's thought or delay. She connected her scanner to the biobed whilst she was waiting for the results to scroll up on the rear monitor.

"Zac!" she said, her throat closing with emotion to see him also beaten and badly hurt. "What hurts most, my dear friend?" she asked him, making sure not to speak too loudly to hurt him with too much volume. Having a frown on his face from the pain in his head and one eye closed with swelling and bruising, he looked as if he were defending himself against the onslaught of too much brightness and too much noise, although this might not have been entirely the exact reasons for his expressions and appearance, but that was what he was looking like and J'Air spoke softly in an instant, automatic response to try not to make it all worse for him.

"You are a sight for sore eyes well eye." He tried to joke but the pain was too, much and he fell back on the biobed with am anguished groan. "My head." he answered after a moment. "It feels like it is going to explode."

"I'm programming the Bio-Arch to administer some pain-relief right now and I should have the run of scans and test results in just a moment." she continued.

Emily saw Zac and quickly rushed across to him, right now she was classed as a patient too rather than medical staff. Right now she just wanted to be with him, he made her feel safe and right now that was what she needed.

"Emily!" Zac greeted the best he could as she came to his biobed. "Are you alright? Is Leilani alright as well." He anxiously asked. His relief at seeing Emily obvious.

Emily nodded but didn’t say much, memories of her old trauma from years ago pulling her back to being temporarily non verbal. She wished George were here to see her but she knew they’d be keeping families out for now so sickbay wasn’t overwhelmed.

"Emily. Everything is okay now. We're safe and back aboard the Elysium. Later once we're checked over we can go back to our quarters." Zac told her.

Emily nodded again offering a brief smile. She needed to see her adopted daughter as well, to know she was safe.

"That's my girl." Zac said encouragingly at seeing Emily smile.

"Zac's right, Emily" J'Air reinforced the assurances the Lieutenant had given his Fiancee. "Are you okay yourself?" she asked, scooping Emily into a grouping with Zac, of patients she was treating together. "This bed here, next to Zac is free Emily" she added, gesturing to it. "Would you like to sit or lie on this one whilst you both get treatment at the same time?

Emily nodded she was still decompressing from her experience, she would speak again once the trauma had washed over.

"Come sit next to me while you get checked over." Zac said softly to Emily, "Then once the doctors are through we can go to our quarters and recuperate together there."

"We'll do all we can to get you sorted out as quickly as we possibly can. I realise you have your own wounds to tend to so you'll both need to get over with these bright lights and the noise that only a Sickbay can generate. I'll do whatever I can." J'Air promised.

Sthilg was already in his surgical scrubs and was working on the more seriously wounded of the crew. Thankfully, nothing that the skilled Gorn surgeon hadn't done before. With another patient seen to he gave a yell of "NEXT." as he took a swig of water before seeing who was next.
