Season 6: Episode 7: Crossroads of Destiny
Location: Niea IV : Detention Centre
Timeline: MD5
2357 words - 4.7 OF Standard Post Measure
Then he turned, "TEAM B! HIGH SECURITY! ON ME!" The second element moved with him. "Romulan element, take the right! Gami, Nenaa, left side! Swede, watch our six! Keep this corridor open!"
Sam moved forward with them. Rifle-mounted lights and helmet lamps cut through the dark areas ahead, sweeping across walls, intersections and doorways as Team B pushed deeper into the detention center. A sealed door blocked their advance.
Sam called, "SAPPER!"
Liam hurried forward and looked over the door blocking their forward momentum. He quickly chose and set the explosive charges he would need to remove the door from their path, then stepped back to the side. "Fire in the hole!" He shouted over the comms, then he pressed the trigger, and the cutting charges ignited in a shower of sparks, before the breaching chages exploded, forcing the heavy steel door to fly inward less than a second later.
Behind them, Team A was already disappearing into the prison. Distant booms reverberated through the structure. Phaser fire cracked somewhere beyond the walls. Overhead, fighter craft kept the Lonian defenses occupied and forced attention away from the assault happening inside. The alarm screamed continuously. Amber light strobed across armor and weapons. Somewhere farther inside came shouted Lonian orders. Running feet. They were responding. Sam keyed his comm.
=/\= Elysium, Bravo. Initial breach secure. Team B entering high-security. Beginning recovery. =/\=
The transmission went to the command-and-control element aboard the Elysium. Captain Taylor and the Bridge needed to know where the rescue teams were and what progress they were making.
The obstruction was cleared. It was loud and effective.
Team B moved.
Sam raised his voice as they advanced into the corridor, "STARFLEET MARINES!"
The words carried ahead of them, through the alarms and beyond the forcefields. "IF YOU'RE ONE OF OURS, GET DOWN! STAY DOWN AND AWAY FROM THE DOORS!"
Containment cells came into view. Sam moved to the prisoner registry and searched it quickly. There. Azhul Naxea. Mattias Richardson. Teevs Dosivi. Damien Blackford. Names on a list. No prisoners...yet.
He keyed his comm again. And the bodycam footage was viewable.
=/\= Elysium, Bravo. High-security is in lockdown. Confirmed Lonian movement toward our position. Prisoner registry shows four Elysium personnel in this wing: Naxea, Richardson, Dosivi, Blackford. Beginning recovery. =/\=
Sam released the channel. He looked toward the Marines around him. Four people. Four objectives. Get in. Get them. Get out.
Samuel tightened his grip on his rifle. "Nobody gets left in here." Then he pointed down the high-security corridor. "Let's go get our people."
An alarm flooded the air, the bright prison lights turning into a flashing amber. Around the same time, rapid footsteps hinted to a change in guard behaviour, from a standard patrol to defensive positions. An explosion. A shout from a familiar voice.
Teevs flinched when the alarm sounded. He hadn't moved much after the "lesson" that came after he asked Sama to spare his daughter, only enough to tell Naxea (who had the best line of sight) that they unfortunately kept him alive. He had eventually moved to the cot to try and rest, and he painfully sat up to figure out what was going on. A resonance modulator had been put on him, obscuring his nose and mouth from view and silencing anything he could have said. He shifted as best as he could toward the back wall of the cell. The voice said to get down, but he still looked to Naxea to see what she would do.
Naxea recognized the voice. "Everyone, get to the back of your cells now!" she ordered despite the pain in her side. Breathing seemed to get harder as she moved towards the back
From his cell, Mattias still lay in the pile where he fell, when he was shot, several times, by the Lonian guard, after he broke free from his ill-fitting restraints. Thankfully, the wrapon had been on stun. Unfortunately, even on that setting, Mattias had taken several hits from the weapon, then the guard had kicked him a few times for good measure, a couple of the hits struck his face, breaking his nose and his jaw. He was still laying there, in his own blood, when the team arrived to rescue them.
"CLEAR!" a Marine called.
"CLEAR!" and then "MEDIC!"
Woolheater heard the voice of his CO, Lieutenant Colonel Azhul. Naxea's voice carried through the corridor. Sam heard it. For the briefest moment, something changed behind his eyes.
~Alive! ~
Good enough. Everything else could wait. Woolheater checked the cell numbers against the registry and pointed. "Gami, Nenaa...get those cells open. Swede, hold the corridor. Nobody gets through that door behind us."
Samuel moved forward, rifle covering the far end of the passage. "If they can't walk, we carry them. Get them to the beam-out point and clear of the structure." Sam glanced once toward Naxea's cell. Then his attention went straight back downrange.
Woolheater made a motion with two fingers toward the corridor ahead.
"Romulan backup! Security element! On me!" He raised his rifle. "Go!"
Gami grinned at her friend as the forcefield dropped. "Typical. Always getting into trouble," she said.
Naxea grimaced, unable to keep from chuckling as she placed her arm to her side, against her ribs as she stepped forward. Each step sent pain into her sides.
"What happened?" Gami asked noticing the pain in her movements and sensing her pain.
"Let's just get out of here," she said.
Gami nodded. "Follow me, Colonel."
When the alarm suddenly sounded, Damien's eyes snapped open, and he jumped to his feet, which he quickly regretted, as a sharp spike of pain flared through his ribs. He moved closer to the cell door, attempting his best to look down the corridor, straining his ears as he heard the sudden commotion and voices. At Naxea's sudden shout, he complied, taking a few steps back, just as a small explosion rocked the room. Smoke filled the air, and the dread that had been coiling in his chest suddenly started to loosen as he recognised the familiar uniform of the Elysium's Marines.
Seeing the marine gear, Teevs relaxed slightly. Wincing, he shifted so someone could reach his hands, and he saw hands near his face working on the gag. His face grimaced slightly as his hands became free, his shoulders sore from the lack of movement. He accepted the help up, then almost immediately buckled as one of his legs failed to support him. His expression twisted into pain, and for a couple seconds he couldn’t breathe as his broken leg screamed at him. Realising that walking was not an option, he indicated that with a shake of his head.
As the marines helped him out of the cell, his eyes found Naxea's. "My daughter..." he strained, his voice hoarse. "Please... I can’t leave without her..."
Woolheater heard Teevs behind him.
“My daughter... Please... I can’t leave without her...”
Sam turned towards him, “We know about Kerilia.” His voice was firm enough to carry through the alarms. “Kerilia has her own recovery element. Captain Young has that objective.”
Sam saw Teevs's leg give beneath him, “You don't have to leave without her. You just have to let us get you out.” He pointed toward two Marines. “Get Dosivi off that leg and get him out of here. Carry him if you have to.”
Teevs conceded a nod. From the short volunteer time he spent with them, he knew that the marines were more than capable. They were also in far better condition than he was. He winced as the marines positioned him to be carried as it was the faster option.
Then his eyes moved across the corridor, “Where's Richardson?”
A Marine's voice came from the opposite cell. “Here! He's down!”
Sam's head snapped toward it, “MEDIC! Richardson's cell!”
Woolheater brought his rifle back up and looked toward the far end of the corridor. He saw Gami already moving Naxea toward extraction. Good. One accounted for, “Excellent. Nenaa, get Blackford out! Swede, keep that fucking door shut!”
When the Marine entered the cell, Damien moved forward, leaning against the soldier as they wrapped an arm around Damien's shoulder, supporting his weight as they moved back out into the hallway, and one step closer to freedom.
Sam turned without missing a beat as phaser fire was heard all around them now. He keyed his comm and spoke in that Marine, calm, radio voice of his.
=/\= Elysium, Bravo. High-security detainees located. Multiple casualties. Extraction in progress. Our people are badly injured. Stand by for medical transport. =/\=
Sam dropped the channel. His eyes swept the cells one last time.
Naxea. Blackford. Dosivi. Richardson.
Four in. Four coming out.
“We got 'em. Nobody stays. Move.”
Then, weapons fire. The reinforcements kept pushing to breach the line that Swede and the others established. Shouts about not letting them leave this section could be heard.
Liam took a couple shots with his phaser, then ducked behind the cover he had set up. "Who said we were going that way?" He grinned an evil grin as he pulled out the detonator he had linked to the explosives he had set along the way. "FIRE IN THE HOLE!" He shouted to his team in warning. He then pressed the trigger on the detonator and two dozen small, by very powerful explosive charges went off at once, completely decimating the halls they had traversed, and every Lonian guard who was unlucky enough to be in them.
The explosions also opened up a break in the prisons shielding and the teams started beaming back to the ship. Prisoners, wounded and dead, thankfully there were only four, two Romulans, a young Marine and a Security crewman. Then, the rest of the team was beamed out.
Using all of Elysium's transporters, the entire process took less than three minutes. In the end, all that was left, was a smoking ruin and numerous Lonian casualties.
As transporter beams began pulling the recovery teams from the detention center, a warning flashed across Woolheater's tactical display. The combat tricorder chirped and Sam stopped. Something had changed. He pulled the display closer and expanded the tactical overlay. Above the detention block, movement flickered across an elevated control platform near one of the damaged shield emitters.
Three Lonians.
One carried what looked like a portable power module. Another was already kneeling beside an exposed control junction, pulling away damaged components. Sam stared at it for half a second. Then he understood. They were trying to bring the transporter inhibitor back online. Woolheater's first instinct was to call for their electronic warfare specialist. Then he remembered. They had lost that Marine in the last battle. There was no time. The beam-out window was closing. Sam made his decision.
"Keep moving!" Woolheater shouted. He pointed toward the extraction area. "Get the wounded out!" A Marine nearby turned toward him. "Captain..."
"Go! I'll cover!" Sam was already moving. He broke away from the extraction route and headed for a maintenance accessway leading upward. The rifle hung across his chest as he took the stairs two at a time. Another transporter beam flashed somewhere below him. Then another. ~Good!~ He reached the upper level and pushed through an access hatch.
Open air.
The prison complex stretched beneath him, partially obscured by smoke. In the distance, flashes of weapons fire punctuated the amber glow of the detention center. Somewhere overhead, starfighters screamed through the atmosphere. None of it mattered. He dropped behind the low edge of the structure and brought his rifle up. The damaged shield assembly stood across the rooftop complex. The two Lonians were still working while a third stood watch. Woolheater settled the rifle against his shoulder. Not his preferred precision weapon. Didn't matter. He slowed his breathing. The first Lonian was kneeling at the control junction.
Woolheater placed the reticle over him. He calmed his mind and slowed his breathing. His racing heart followed. Somewhere within him came the Cristóbal de Morales motet, Circumdederunt me gemitus mortis.
The sounds of battle began to fall away. The alarms no longer distracted him. His heartbeat slowed until he found the rhythm. No metronome. No counting. The skill was too deeply ingrained for that. He settled the reticle over the target and switched the rifle from kill to stun. There had been enough killing today. He exhaled and fired.
The phaser bolt crossed the distance almost instantaneously. The one Lonian disappeared behind the equipment. The other two dropped for cover. Sam shifted his position several meters before settling again. Below him, another transporter beam shimmered into existence. Then vanished. One of the Lonians raised his head.
Sam fired again.
The bolt struck the housing immediately beside him, showering the position with sparks. The Lonian disappeared again. "Stay down," Sam muttered. Another transporter signature vanished from his tactical display. He waited. Seconds passed. One of the Lonians made a run for the portable power module. Sam tracked him. Fired. The shot struck the module instead. Its casing erupted in a shower of sparks and burning components. The Lonian threw himself away from it.
That was enough.
He kept the rifle trained on the damaged control station. He didn't need to kill them. Starfleet and the Elysium made their point. They simply weren't going to touch that equipment. Not yet. Another transporter signature disappeared. Then another. The tactical display was becoming considerably less crowded. The prisoners and the extraction team were beaming away. Woolheater glanced at the combat tricorder on his rifle. Fewer friendly markers remained on the surface. Another disappeared. Then another. The last of Team B vanished in a transporter shimmer below. Sam tapped his comm.
=/\= Elysium, Woolheater. Confirm recovery status. =/\= A moment passed. =/\= All recovery elements accounted for. You're the last one down there, Captain. =/\= Sam lifted his rifle and looked back through the scope. The Lonians remained behind cover. Good. =/\= Copy. Woolheater ready for transport. =/\=
He kept the rifle against his shoulder until he felt the familiar tingle deep in his guts. Then the rooftop disappeared.
